Intro (Opening thoughts about NXT in general)

AJ LEE (SEASON 3 ROOKIE): It was this giant opportunity for us. We were down in [Florida Championship Wrestling] for years and waiting for that break. We were kind of iffy about it because you don’t want to have to continue to prove yourself. You want to just make it on the road and you’re there. The idea of fighting and clawing and scratching in Developmental for years and then continuing to have to do that and fight and scratch and compete was not the easiest thing in the world.

About the NXT Challenges

AJ: It was hilarious. I think the guys had this cool stuff that we really wanted to be a part of, and then our first thing was a dance contest. But no matter how ridiculous they were, they made you realize that you’d do anything, and there was nothing you could not handle, so it was the best learning experience.

About Development

AJ: Any time I can be myself and not try to be anything that I’m not, people will gravitate toward that because it’s real, and that’s a recipe for success. At the time there was a standard for women and beauty in general, and I think I came out in Chucks and was told not to do it again. And then, the second episode of the show, the people who told me not to were busy working on SmackDown and didn’t get a chance to see what I was wearing, so I ran out with my Chucks on, and it went from there where people were on board with it.

Thoughts on NXT Redemption

AJ: That was actually where Daniel Bryan and I started dating.

AJ: I liked Matt Striker getting kidnapped. I thought that was pretty great.

AJ: It was fun to try stuff out. It really was just a learning experience, trying and failing on a smaller scale so you know what works on a bigger scale.

Legacy (‘I still have flashbacks’)

AJ: That was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. I hope people realize how lucky they are that they don’t have to have chocolate-eating contests and gift-unwrapping contests and dance contests their first day on television [laughs]. We didn’t sleep. Just busy every day, working and training in locker-rooms that were basically large closets.

AJ: It was a trying experience. I have flashbacks. But you’re so much stronger in the long run for it.

#5 AJ Lee vs. Stephanie McMahon – Divas Championship Match

Being a power hungry, self-obsessed, obnoxious owner at most companies isn’t that dangerous. The worst I’ve ever seen happen outside WWE was some screaming and finger flipping before an enraged employee quit and told their employer in what uncomfortable place they could stick their job. However, the consequences in WWE can be much worse. It’s not hard to imagine that the infamous McMahon pride would drive Stephanie to attempt to prove that she is, in every way, the most powerful woman in WWE. Stephanie once won the now-defunct WWE Women’s Championship, but not the newer Divas Championship. AJ Lee is the longest-reigning Divas Champion in WWE history — just check the tattoo on her neck — and has beaten every woman in WWE, except one: her boss. If WWE’s alpha females squared off on The Grandest Stage of Them All, each woman’s drive for dominance could get them to put up what they hold most precious. For Divas Champion AJ Lee, it’d be her ongoing and record-setting championship reign. For WWE Principal Owner, Stephanie McMahon, it’d be her billion dollar ego. I’d wager that the match would end with Stephanie ensnared in AJ’s Black Widow submission hold and tapping out. Even if an official, fearing for his job, refused to call for the bell, the screams of Stephanie heard throughout the sold-out Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans would have AJ skipping and saying, “Laissez les bons temps rouler.” — JOEY STYLES Related Links: World Wrestling Entertainment > WWE.com Specials > Dream WrestleMania XXX Matches

AJ Lee

AJ Lee on how to properly cut a T-shirt, April 2013

“I feel like I get into some sort of rhythm now. Before, I’d go out there just to cause mayhem. Now I have more of a singular purpose, and we have our family, and I go out there to support them by any means necessary. I wouldn’t call myself ‘The Happy Homemaker,’ of course, but I cut Dolph’s shirts because he needs to look as cool as I do. Big E does all the cooking and cleaning. He’s the cute one, and I’m the muscle. So we have our different roles. Most of the time, I’m only allowed to use baby scissors, or else I’ll wreak havoc with the regular ones. Sometimes the seamstresses help me; or rather, they take the weapons out of my hands. Most of the time if I cut the T, there’s a little inner rage in me that often results in the complete destruction of the shirt. There’s something therapeutic about it.”

#2 “I have saved your Divas division. I have shattered glass ceilings.”

“I had been asked to be on [’Total Divas’] and said, ’No.’ That didn’t rub people the right way. Somewhere along the line, someone said, ’Well if she doesn’t want to do it, let her tell us why.’ That was the freedom I was given, and I went out there ready to tear people apart. That was awesome.

“I didn’t really know what I wanted to say, and that was why you see very visceral, real reactions from the girls, because they didn’t know what was going to happen. It was just coming out of my mouth. I just went off on what I actually feel is important, and that’s wrestling. That’s what I think we need to focus on in our business. We have a title for wrestlers, not for ‘Cutest Girl’ or ’Miss Popularity.’ I wasn’t trying to get cheers or boos. I was just trying to speak my mind, and it just so happens that our fans side with me on that.

“When I got backstage, everyone was really pissed at me. That was a very real, raw moment. No pun intended. It stung, but the truth hurts.” — AJ LEE

2013

2013 was a very good year for sports-entertainment. And not just in the sense of the spectacle, the pageantry, and the general ballyhoo that WWE brings. Bearing heroic displays of heart, Herculean feats of strength and Olympian conquests of World Championship gold, 2013 was a great 365 days for the actual art of wrestling itself – so much so that we thought it was only appropriate to pick the best bouts out of a year that was bursting with unforgettable action.

Here’s how we did it: A team of WWE.com editors narrowed the year down to our 25 favorites and determined the rankings by scoring the matches, adding up the totals and ordering them appropriately. The process was arduous and often contentious (John Cena vs. Mark Henry, the Broadway Brawl and the Elimination Chamber Match all barely missed the cut), but it was as honest and democratic as it gets. So, without further ado, here are the Top 25 Matches of 2013, as presented by “The Legend of Hercules.”

#13 Kaitlyn vs. AJ Lee – Divas Championship Match (WWE Payback)
More than one year after their an emotionally troubled AJ Lee ended her friendship with Kaitlyn with a couple of stinging slaps across the face, the pint-sized powder keg set her sights on her former bestie’s Divas Championship at WWE Payback. Pulling at Kaitlyn’s heart strings with a plot involving messages from a “secret admirer” (SPOILER ALERT: It was AJ all along), the diabolical challenger entered Chicago’s Allstate Arena with a clear psychological advantage over Kaitlyn.

In a show of wince-inducing ferocity — more brutal than any Divas match waged in 2013 — Kaitlyn and AJ held nothing back, with the champion ultimately subduing her embattled ex-BFF with a bone-jarring spear. However, instead of going for a pinfall after leaving AJ prone, Kaitlyn stalled to blow her former friend a kiss, allowing AJ ample time to recover and lock the pretty powerhouse in her signature Black Widow submission hold. – JAMES WORTMAN

2013

WWE Magazine did an online feature compiling all 12 of the their winners of their monthly “Jerk of the Month” award for 2013. AJ as you might remember won this not so coveted honor back in June of this year. Below you can find out what AJ had to say about winning the award back in June and also make sure to click the link at bottom to check out both the original scan we have of the article featured in WWE Magazine in June and a new beautiful HD WWE Digital of AJ holding the “Jerk of the Month” trophy. -Andrew

June: AJ Lee reflects on bringing chaos everywhere she went in 2013, even betraying her BFF Kaitlyn — guess that stands for “best former friend.”

“I’m psyched about this award for many, many reasons. The first is that being called a ‘Jerk’ is probably 12th most offensive thing that I’ve been called. Secondly, people misinterpret my actions — it’s just me being passionate. But I do get a fancy trophy out of it! I think I’ll put it on my desk with my Slammys, my Video Game Challenge Award, and my 100-percent Gold Employee Badge from my days of working at Pathmark. See? When I do something, I do it all the way.”

Joey Styles: Though both champion and challenger had to claw and scratch their way to becoming WWE Divas rather than being discovered in modeling agencies, that’s where the parity ends. AJ’s cunning manipulation of most of the Divas division has kept her wearing the butterfly-emblazoned title since the date tattooed on the back of her neck. However, Natalya has never been sucked in to AJ’s web of lies. The Hart Dungeon Diva is the best wrestler in WWE Divas’ division and probably in all of WWE. If WWE still sanctioned inter-gender matches, I think Nattie could German suplex, discus clothesline and Sharpshoot into submission many men in tights. Come WWE TLC, AJ will fall to the generational pink-and-black attack, and a tearful Natalya will be Divas Champion once again. WINNER: Natalya

Alex Giannini: Not to be Mr. Negativity, but I’m once again going against the potentially feel-good story here, and instead of a triumphant Sunday night for much-deserving “Total Diva” Natalya, I’m putting my money on another pay-per-view win for Divas Champion AJ Lee. In a match that may well come down to who taps out first, I’m choosing The Black Widow over the Sharpshooter. WINNER: AJ Lee

Anthony Benigno: Ordinarily, this would be a cinch: AJ in decisive fashion. But the champ hasn’t been the same since losing that Survivor Series Match a few weeks back, and Natalya’s on a roll. Looks like it’s time for The Black Widow to be squashed under the heel of the pink-and-black attack. WINNER: Natalya

Jake Grate: This contest, pitting the grapplers with the Divas division’s two most dangerous submissions against each other, is all but guaranteed to end with either AJ or Natalya tapping out. Although The Queen of Harts’ pedigree and technical prowess are impeccable, AJ simply finds ways to win and retain the butterfly-emblazoned title. She continues that impressive streak at WWE TLC. WINNER: AJ Lee

John Clapp: AJ Lee had better squeeze in as much snuggle time as possible with her beloved Divas Championship now, because at WWE TLC, her reign could well come to an end. Thanks to recent wins over Tamina Snuka, momentum is working in Natalya’s favor. Expect the third-generation Diva to look more confident than ever en route to making AJ tap. WINNER: Natalya

AJ Lee: 2, Natalya: 3
